Bench, by Gail Fredell

If you’ve driven down Depot Street (past Clingman Café and the Soapy Dog ), you’ve likely noticed one of the newest neighbors in the River Arts District–the Glen Rock Depot www.GlenRockDepot.com, a 90,000 SF green building that includes 60 workforce apartments and two awesome businesses…with room for more!

Angelique Tassistro, Jen Swearington and Gail Fredell were chosen through a Call to Artists to create architectural elements for the building: Door Tiles for Residents, a Wall of Gratitude, and Benches, respectively.

Angelique Tassistro, a neighbor of the Glen Rock Depot, designed and constructed touching and fun handmade tiles for each of the 60 workforce apartments in 372 Depot.  She is the founder Fly Coop Studios, introducing a new line of whimsical pottery.  Her studio is open to the public and is located in the Asheville’s River Arts District at 375 Depot, across the street from the Glen Rock Depot.

Jen Swearington designed and constructed a unique and lovely Wall of Gratitude for the main public lobby of 372 Depot.  The Wall of Gratitude offers thanks to those community partners and funders who made the space a reality.  Jen is known primarily for her dreamy, narrative art quilts and Jennythreads, her line of handmade clothing and accessories.

Gail Fredell designed and constructed beautiful Wooden Benches for two locations near the commercial storefronts at 372 Depot.  Gail is an internationally known artist who moved to Asheville in 2009.

Also, The Magnetic Field is the first theatre in the Southeast to show only original theatre works.  The Magnetic Field will be offering sneak previews of their upcoming show 10 minute previews of the 27th Annual Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular at 5:30, 6:15, and 7:00 p.m. the evening of the Glen Rock Depot Grand Opening, Thursday, December 2.

372 Depot’s 60 workforce apartments were fully leased within 60 days, demonstrating the strong demand for workforce housing in Buncombe County.  The building also includes 3,000 SF of community space, 9,000 SF of commercial space, and 60 solar panels built and installed by FLS Energy, providing solar thermal hot water to every residential unit.

Come on by and check it out with one of the tours during the Grand Opening on Thursday, December 2 from 3:30 – 7 p.m.

If you’ve driven down Depot Street (past Clingman Café and the Soapy Dog ), you’ve likely noticed one of the newest neighbors in the River Arts District–the Glen Rock Depot, a 90,000 SF green building that includes 60 workforce apartments and two awesome businesses…with room for more!  This may be your only opportunity for tours of the lovely workforce apartments, interior courtyard with grey water catchment cistern and permeable pavers, and other green features, like FLS Energy’s designed and installed 60 hot water solar panel system.

Anchor tenant, The Magnetic Field, performance and coffee house and bar, resides in the southern most end of 372 Depot.  The Magnetic Field is owned by local producer Chall Gray.  It will be the only venue in the southeast that will focus on original theatre works.

West One Salon is moving from downtown Asheville to the Glen Rock Depot in November 2010.  West One Salon focuses on easy to maintain, effortless styles. After years of parking challenges, West One Salon owners decided it was time to find a location that would make visiting the salon easier for their clients.  When the owners read about Glen Rock Depot, a green building with plenty of parking in the vibrant River Arts District, they knew immediately it would be the perfect place for the salon.

372 Depot’s 60 workforce apartments were fully leased within 60 days, demonstrating the strong demand for workforce housing in Buncombe County.  The building also includes 3,000 SF of community space, 9,000 SF of commercial space, and 60 solar panels built and installed by FLS Energy www.FLSEnergy.com, providing solar thermal hot water to every residential unit.

FLS Energy and Mountain Housing Opportunities were featured in The Green Economy as a model for solar investing.  FLS Energy is an amazing company both for what they do and who they are.  MHO has an outstanding track recording for building workforce housing in Buncombe County.  The Glen Rock Depot is their first multi-use development that includes 60 workforce apartments that were fully leased in 60 days.  The solar panels provide hot water for each apartment.

By Maryruth Belsey Priebe, Senior Editor, The Green Economy and A. Tana Kantor:

“If your business doesn’t use enough hot water—for manufacturing, cleaning  or other uses—the option is to become an investor in a local project. Either way, the starting point is finding the right partners: installers and developers who know their way around the often complex financing that  makes solar thermal a win for investors, tenants, owners, developers and utilities. Based on a recent project in North Carolina, Solar thermal looks like a great bet with lots of upsides…

…The project has been developed through FLS Energy, a solar thermal and photovoltaic company based in Asheville, North Carolina.  They worked with an experienced syndication partner—CityScape Capital Groupin El Segundo, California—to complete a complex financing that included investors such as Bank of America.”

See the Glen Rock Depot during their Grand Opening on Thursday, December 2, 2010 from 3.30 – 7.00 p.m. at 372 Depot.

The Glen Rock Depot is 65% completed and will have 60 workforce apartments and 9,000 square feet of commercial space in the historic River Arts District. It may be the first LEED-certified mixed use building in Asheville. Green features include: solar hot water, pervious pavers, rainwater collection, low VOC paints, Energy Star appliances, and a master recycling system. The location is also biking and walking friendly and is within 1.5 miles of Asheville Middle and Asheville High Schools, the YWCA, Mission Hospitals, A-B Tech Community College and downtown Asheville.

FLS Energy has just completed the installation of 60 hot water solar panels at the Glen Rock. Each panel system includes one solar hot water panel and a 40 to 50 gallon solar storage tank. FLS Energy owns the solar hot water systems and sells the energy needed to heat the water back to MHO at a rate less than the current prices for fossil fuels typically used to heat water. Estimates are that all 60 panels combined will create 588 billion BTUs per year.

The combined environmental benefits of using solar hot water panels include:
- 36 tons of carbon emissions saved each year
- The equivalent of planting 109 trees per year
- 9 cars off the road per year
- Annual equivalent of energy needs for 13 homes
-Dramatic decrease in energy bills
- Solar hot water is an abundant energy source and is locally available, reducing the dependence on foreign sources of fuel.
- Solar energy is free and silent. It doesn’t contribute to air pollution or global warming.
