Y’all, please hang out with me at this awesome Dinner and Warehouse Dance Party fundraiser for Green Opportunities on May 22!  Green Opportunities is an Asheville-based, community-based development organization dedicated to building a strong and just green economy through job training and placement, community education, and green micro-enterprises.

The River Arts District area can be confusing, so I thought I’d offer my personal stroll plan–I’m going on Sunday by the way.  The crowds are smaller.

RDAMap

This is how I will navigate my stroll:

  1. Park in the gravel lot near the Wedge Brewery, next to the railroad tracks
  2. Go to Clingman Cafe and hop on the FREE trolley to Roots Cafe in Railside Studios and have a bite to eat
  3. Walk from Roots Cafe down Riverside Drive to Cotton Mill Studios and then onto Curve Studios and then to Warehouse Studios
  4. Hop on the FREE trolley to Riverview Station and spend some time there, check out the Seven Star Factory and Ginger Huebner at Riverview Station South #250 for sure
  5. Hop back on the FREE trolley back to the Clingman Cafe area and walk up Clingman to Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts.  I’m going to check out their upcoming classes and they have artists working there as well with artwork for sale
  6. Walk back down past Clingman Cafe (there’s an info booth there too, if you get lost), stop in to say hi at the orange Soapy Dog and on to check out the new Glen Rock Depot development and the Fine Arts League at 362 Depot Street–corner of Barlett and Depot
  7. Finally, I’ll walk back up to the five-way stop near Clingman Cafe and head up Roberts Street to check out all the artists in the Wedge Studios, Clay Space Co-op, Michael Hoffman, don’t miss Terpsicorps upstairs, and then across Clingman Ave. to the Phil Mechanic Building to see Ursula Gullow for sure
  8. Stop at the Wedge Brewery in the basement of the Wedge building for a double IPA, 3rd Rail

Whew!

During the Studio Stroll, now in its 15th year, artists of the River Arts District welcome you into their studios to talk with them, see their latest artwork, watch demonstrations, and experience for yourself the magic hidden inside the time-worn factories and warehouses along the French Broad River.  And, don’t forget to support their businesses by purchasing something.

The Studio Stroll is free and open to the public. Most studios are within walking distance of each other, and there is plenty of free parking.  Also, the trolley shuttle is free this year thanks to Michael Hoffman and the Seven Star Factory.

Reasons to go to the Studio Stroll:

1. Holiday Gift Shopping, LOCALLY

2. To Support Local Businesses (including the eateries: 12 Bones, Roots Cafe, Clingman Cafe, Twin Cousins Kitchen, and stop for a pint at the Wedge Brewery)

  • I love all these places, and my personal recommendation if you haven’t been there yet is to stop by Roots Cafe.  It’s in the Railside Studios.  Also, word on the street is that the Wedge Brewery is serving a double IPA right now, called 3rd Rail.

3. To Learn More About the Developments Happening in the River Arts District

  • Mountain Housing Opportunities is opening their Glen Rock Depot leasing office in the Fine Arts League for the Studio Stroll. The Glen Rock Depot is a mixed use, community development in the River Arts District and historic South French Broad and Livingston neighborhoods that includes: Commercial and Retail Space, Business Suites and Workforce Apartments.  They are leasing now.
  • Leasing Office Hours: Saturday, Nov. 14 from noon-6:00 p.m. & Sunday, Nov. 15 from noon-3:00 p.m.  The Leasing office is in the Fine Arts League: 362 Depot Street, Asheville, NC 28801

Keep an eye out for the next Pollinate Asheville post about how I have planned out my Studio Stroll.
